May 6, 2011 — When I held the position as Director of all sales and marketing for a well known developer, locating and keeping quality sales and marketing performers was always an issue and our policy was, as it should be, to do what we could to attract and retain the crème de la crème!
However, it seems that policy, industry wide, has gone the way of SPIFFS, etc. This week I spoke with one of my former star closers (Mary) who told me such a hair raising story that if I had heard it from anyone else I would have likely doubted its truthfulness.
Mary told me she had responded to an ad on Craig’s List seeking to fill all positions for the marketing and sales operations of a timeshare resort. She sent in her resume that included her very impressive and verifiable STATS and references, etc., and that was followed by a phone ‘chat’ (what passes as an interview these days).
Long story short, about a week later (it took that long for this developer to comprehend her qualities and what she ‘brings to the table’) Mary was offered a position as a front to back rep. But Mary lived very far from the resort and when she accepted the position she also requested reimbursement for her family’s relocation expenses.
The developer, in all fairness, offered ‘temp’ housing but as far as paying for or reimbursing any moving expenses that was “out of the question”, which became the proverbial deal breaker!
Mary shared with me many of the e-mail communications that went back and forth between her and the developer and all I can say is that the developer is either incredibly broke, stupid or just plain greedy beyond his own good.
And for the record, when Mary was on one of our teams she was consistently a top performer, maintenance free (no booze or drug problems); and she is a US Armed Forces Veteran, a married woman with a very supportive husband, two wonderful children, Church-goer and the type of person who’d go out of her way to help a total stranger.
Oh, and her moving expenses, in this industry, amounted to chump change and her STATS are impressive enough to warrant ‘post’ money many times higher than her out of pocket relocation expenses.
I suspect Mary’s story is just one of many, and to my way of thinking they represent just how bad things have become in ‘the biz’.
