November 25, 2011 — This Thanksgiving weekend, whether you are a timeshare developer, a seasoned marketing or sales veteran, someone new to the ‘biz’ or a timeshare owner vacationing in superior accommodations around the world we all have a lot to be thankful for and one of those blessings is our industry and all the people who made it possible.
Going back to our humble beginnings in the 1960’s, beginning in Europe and then in the USA, etc., a trail was blazed by innovative risk takers. Starting with the first developers (and the original ranks of the marketing and sales reps as well as, I might add), those risk takers also include the first fearless timeshare owners (buyers) who signed on the dotted line.
What a ride it as been! And like any industry, although we’ve had our growing pains, through it all our combined efforts, skills, dedication and steadfastness developed a legendary travel product and service that we can all be very proud to be associated with today and (oh how we forget!) one that provides a vacationing lifestyle once reserved for the more affluent travelers.
As such, at ‘The Gate’ we need your help as we’d like to build and host, free of charge, a permanent tribute to honor all those very special people who conceived, molded, shaped, developed and transformed an ‘idea’ into this worldwide industry. To that end, we invite all 14,000 + monthly readers to submit the names of anyone (or company) who contributed and had an impact in our industry.
There is so much of our past that needs to be preserved and even though we and other publications have a ‘history’ section and I myself have written on this subject (“Giants’ Of Our Industry; July 23, 2010) etc. our thoughts are to build a virtual exhibit with photo’s, video’s etc. telling the whole story of each individual and/or their company etc.
Consider for example the contributions of (in no particular order or rank) Alexander Nette & Dr. Guido Renngli (Hapimag); the late Bob Burns & Bob Rengenburg (Vacation Internationale); Carl Berry, Paul Gray, Greg Bright, Doug Murdock and Dave Irmer (Innisfree Companies); Roy I. Fraser (VRI); David Siegel (Westgate Resorts); Daniel Chavez Moran (Mayan Resorts); Deb Linden (Island One); Artie Spector and Michael Kaplan (Consolidated Resorts); Sheldon Ginsburg & Perry Snyderman (Shell Vacations); the Cloobecks, Sheldon, Stephen and Richard, (The Jockey Club, et al); Bill Peare (Trendwest Resorts); Raymond ‘Rip’ Gellein & Jeffrey Adler (Vistana Resorts); Keith Trowbridge (Captran Resorts International); Steven Kosmas (The Kosmas Group); Wayne Kinser (Peppertree Resorts); the late James Lambert (Berkley Group) and other ‘giants’ of the era.
Then there are all past and present sales, marketing and management folks and all the ancillary businesses/companies that have impacted our industry from the finance firms to (e.g.) MasterCorp, which was started in 1981 by Alan Grindstaff and today is a leading provider of resort housekeeping services in the timeshare industry.
The list is nearly endless but if you get it then we seek your help and encourage you to touch base with us. Together let’s all build a proper tribute befitting and preserving our history.
Heck, maybe we could even add the infamous Jim Quincy to the mix, but maybe have him (and others) in a special section called ‘The Hall of Shame’ (LOL)!
Look forward to hearing from you all soon.
