December 21, 2012 — If you are reading this then it looks like we made it through the Mayan forecast that all life (people, too) on our planet was likely to come to a dramatic, sudden & catastrophic conclusion on December 21, 2012. Their prediction, of course, would include our beloved industry and what I firmly believe will be a prosperous New Year in 2013 for those developers, marketers and sales reps who continue to evolve with the times.
So here’s the scoop. If the Mayan’s were actually wrong and we are all really still here and not now living in some bizarre dimension such as an alternative universe, caught in a time warp or devoured by a black hole then once again I’m going to go out on a limb with an Inside The Gate exclusive Scoop du Jour forecast for the coming year.
At the end of 2013 those timeshare developers who didn’t evolve their product line and customer services at their resorts (including the treatment of their sales guests as well as their overall marketing & sales practices plus their recruiting, hiring and training methods) will find themselves and their ‘net’ results, 12 months from this very day, exactly where they are at this precise moment in time (in 2012).
Actually, adjusted for inflation and other real world business, financial and economic realities some developers will be in the hole at the end of next year, as will their marketing and sales reps who roll out of bed on (or about) Wednesday, January 2, 2013 and head into the office continuing their current practices & techniques with a status quo mindset.
If I could make any suggestion for the coming new year and, like you, being keenly aware that as a global industry we are not united and in fact, from the Street OPC and all the way up the food chain we work, like most industries, in a dog eat dog environment, it would be this.
This will take real leadership but in this new era it is time for those progressive developers desiring to surpass previous milestones such as sales volume etc. to unite all corners of their companies and invite everyone involved in the future success of the company to a one day fully sponsored
bash, I mean a company convention, so to speak.
Those invited could include all supportive personnel such as the office crew, the maintenance team, security, marketing, sales, management, etc. and the theme would be that ‘we’re’ all in this together, ‘we’re’ all in the vacation/travel business and that united ‘we’re’ only limited by a lack of sound business ideas, goals, objectives, efforts and attitudes.
And if you’d like me to attend just let me know and I’ll prepare ‘…a brief but informative 90 minute ‘get-together’…’ designed for the marketing and sales reps and address a couple of pertinent topics that apparently need some clarification and put to rest, once and for all, an end to nearly 50 years of some timeshare marketing and sales gobbledygook that cost developers and reps monetary (money) losses every day of the year.
You know, maybe I could chat on subjects along the lines of:
1. It is true that “an UP is an UP”; but a large percentage of those “UPS” are a pure waste of the reps’ time and developer resources (aka: money) and anyone who doesn’t know that or claims otherwise needs to hit the bricks and head down the old camino most lickety-split!
2. DROPS don’t make deals happen but sold deals make DROPS work as intended. First and foremost sell the deal clean and rock solid and then, only when absolutely necessary, DROP!
3. LOVE LINES are antiquated & need to become extinct!
4. A DEAL IS MADE EVERYTIME is pure childish nonsense!
5. YOU ARE ONLY AS GOOD AS YOUR LAST DEAL; see #4!
