CANCUN, MX (July 24, 2013) — On August 31, 2013. 1,000 athletes from various parts of Mexico and abroad will participate in the sixth edition of the Charlie & Friends Half Marathon.
At the event’s press conference, Orlando Arroyo Marroquín, President of the Board of Directors for Sunset World Resorts & Vacation Experiences, and Carlos Fuentes Becerril, Director of Charlie & Friends, announced that for the first time ever this race, to be run along Kukulkan Boulevard, will be open to the general public.
Among the main objectives for this sixth edition of the race is to motivate people to exercise as well as to promote healthy lifestyles and family bonding. The As Deporte company will provide magnetic chronometers to time each runner and will also promote the race both nationally and abroad.
“We want to be the best event in Cancun and project ourselves internationally for the organization and details for the runners, who are always the most important aspect for us,” said Fuentes Becerril. He also explained that there will be a public exhibition in Plaza Atrium, located next to the Pabellón Caribe, where runners will be able to pick up their numbers on August 29 and August 30 while they enjoy two live rock bands, conferences led by health professionals and athletes as well as goods and services related to physical fitness.
The General Director of Charlie & Friends reminded the audience that the traditional race was first organized as an event amongst friends, with the participation of just 38 people.
“Orlando Arroyo wanted to organize an event here in Cancun that would be similar to other events such as the marathon races in Chicago, Las Vegas or Miami, which we assist every year. But due to other commitments we couldn’t attend so I decided to organize a race and Mr. Arroyo told me that he would help me with whatever I needed,” added Fuentes Becerril.
The success of the first event and the interest this coming together of friends generated led to the realization of the second edition with the participation of 100 runners, followed by 200 runners and 350 runners, respectively, in the following two years. Last year’s race, the fifth edition of Charlie & Friends, saw the participation of 514 runners and a similar number of people who wanted to sign up but couldn’t due to questions of logistics of this free event.
Registration began on June 28 and will close on July 25, 2013; sooner if all spots are filled up before that date.
“We are transforming the race for this sixth edition. Many people in Cancun are asking to participate and now we have an open call. We expect 1,000 runners this year. But this time we will have to charge a minimum fee to cover the costs,” said Fuentes Becerril. He also expressed his gratitude to Mr. Arroyo Marroquín and Sunset World Resorts & Vacation Experiences for their support and contribution to make this sporting event possible.
The race will be organized into the following categories: 21 km, 10 km (Plaza Flamingos), 5 km Walk & Run (Capitan’s Cove) and 3 km baby carriage race (Mirador).
The cost of registration is 150 pesos and includes a t-shirt, medal, number, supplies, entertainment, medical attention and road safety.
“Having our own website, Facebook and Twitter allows us to be in constant contact with the runner and not just the day of the race. Our energy has to reach the entire running community and make this event a huge family happening,” concluded Fuentes Becerril.
Gabriel Aguiñaga, Director General and Operations Director of the Municipal Sports Institute, respectively, were also present at the press conference.
