VUOKATTI, Finland (July 4, 2013) — The opening of three significant holiday attractions took place at Holiday Club Saimaa in the Rauha district of Lappeenranta: Capri Shopping Centre and its main draw for the whole family, Angry Birds Activity Park. An opening game was also played on the Golf Saimaa course. Holiday Club Saimaa’s booking situation for the summer of 2013 looks good, and visitors are flocking in from both Finland and Russia.
Holiday Club acquired the unfinished shopping centre in the autumn of 2012, and restarted the construction work that had ground to a halt. The company also wasted no time in leasing the commercial premises of the 8,000 m2 shopping centre. The value of the investment was about €13 million. Customers of Capri are now served by the 1,000 m2 Heinon Pikatukku cash-and-carry outlet, clothing, shoe and souvenir shops, restaurants and cafés, and the Rauhan apteekki pharmacy – in addition to the popular Angry Birds Activity Park.
“By investing in Capri, we are ensuring the diverse and appropriate development of the Holiday Club Saimaa resort. One of the attractions of the new shopping centre is the Angry Birds Activity Park. The third new thing for the summer is our 18-hole golf course that meanders through the breath-taking landscape,” says Vesa Tengman, Managing Director of Holiday Club Resorts Oy.
Angry Birds Activity Park is the fourth year-round indoor activity park in Finland. The 2,500 m2 space is divided into two floors. The entry floor has activities for younger children, along with the Angry Birds Shop. The upper floor features interactive activities themed around
Angry Birds Space. Holiday Club’s other Angry Birds Activity Parks are located in Kuusamo and Saariselkä. In addition, Holiday Club Katinkulta is situated near the Angry Birds park in Vuokatti. The Angry Birds parks appeal to both Finnish and international tourists. The attractions have been designed for the entire family, with engaging activities for people of all ages. Groups are also an important part of the customer base.
Holiday Club Golf Saimaa was opened in mid-June. At the end of June, all 18 fairways and the 6-hole par-3 course were available for golfers. The new pay&play course has garnered a great deal of interest, and it already has 300 members. During the current season, plenty of training courses have been held. Finnish and Russian tourists are expected to attend the evening and weekend courses alongside local residents. Holiday Club has invested about €4 million in the golf course.
The peak of Holiday Club Saimaa’s summer season is now in full swing and plenty of bookings have been made. Between January and May 2013, the number of visitors was 6% higher than during the same period the year before. The Saimaa resort is annually visited by more than 200,000 customers. Russians make up 40 % of the visitors.
Significant investments to continue at the Saimaa resort
The spa hotel and holiday resort Holiday Club Saimaa opened its doors in November 2011. Now, the resort boasts about 1,300 beds. In addition to the 221 hotel rooms, Holiday Club has built holiday homes to be sold as both weekly timeshares and fully-owned Villas holiday homes. Both products have sold extremely well, and the construction of new holiday homes is underway. Holiday Club has also invested in the resort’s outdoor areas to ensure holiday enjoyment despite the construction work. By the summer of 2013, the total investments in Holiday Club Saimaa stand at €129 million.
“Over the next five to ten years, we will invest some 70 million additional euros in the Saimaa resort. We intend to build 40–50 Villas holiday homes and 150–200 weekly timeshare homes,” says Vesa Tengman, and continues: “One of our new interesting products is a private hospital, which is being planned for the central pavilion. It is targeted for completion during 2014. Health tourism fits perfectly in Holiday Club Saimaa’s diverse selection of services.”
Angry Birds Activity Park on the Canaries
Holiday Club is building an Angry Birds Activity Park on Gran Canaria in the centre of Puerto Rico, the second largest tourist centre on the island. The outdoor theme park with a total area of 5,600 m2 will be opened in October 2013. The value of the investment is about €3.5 million. The new park is expected to be visited by more than 100,000 customers each year. The park is aimed at tourists visiting Gran Canaria, as well as local residents and groups of children. The Angry Birds Activity Park, along with the scenic golf area, snack store and shop complement Holiday Club’s offering of activities on Gran Canaria.
The Angry Birds park to be built on the Canaries is another collaboration between Rovio, Lappset and Holiday Club. The concept of building theme parks at holiday resorts was born from the combination of the lovable birds that Rovio launched to global success, Lappset’s playgrounds and Holiday Club’s expertise in holiday services that is unique in the entire European region.
