November 22, 2013 — In the “Land of the Free” I find it astounding that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is reporting on their website that – “Nationwide – law enforcement made an estimated 12,408,899 arrests in 2011. Of these arrests, 534,704 were for violent crimes, and 1,639,883 were for property crimes.” According to the FBI “The estimated arrest rate for the United States in 2011 was 3,991.1 arrests per 100,000 inhabitants.”
So Here’s The Scoop: And what does this have to do with Timeshare Land you ask? Well as a nation the Untied States of America has just about 5% of the total world population but according to reports, in the USA we also house (incarcerate) about 25% of the world’s total imprisoned population — which is also pretty darn astonishing.
If the FBI ‘stats’ are correct that means over the past (e.g.) decade – as an industry – we’ve been ‘touring’ a bunch of sales guests with arrest/criminal backgrounds, and that kind of makes me wonder how many became TS owners — especially over the past 50 years of our industry’s history.
And looking forward if things don’t change and since we are rapidly converting our incarceration system into being run by private for-profit corporations, then over the next brief 10 years the nation will arrest — now brace yourself — 120,000,000 (Million) “inhabitants” mostly U.S. Citizens, many of whom will go on ‘tour’!
Sure, there are the ‘repeat-offenders’ in the mix but, excluding any increase in the annual arrest ratios, over the next 3 decades “law enforcement” in the United States of America will arrest enough “inhabitants” during that period of time to surpass today’s total U.S. population of about 310,000,000 souls. Ouch!
I bring this all up because I’m one of those souls who has always believed, with few exceptions that when all is said and done many of the people who get arrested — even if they were actually found absolutely guilty, paid back ‘society’ and did the time/paid the fine — have earned a second chance in life.
But the cold hard truth is anything but that second chance. With an arrest and now a criminal record, otherwise good people can be prevented from renting, buying or leasing a decent home, getting a loan to purchase a car, attend schools, vote in elections, apply for earned government benefit programs, obtain a salesperson’s license to sell cars, insurance, real estate or timeshares, etc.
Fortunately, in our industry there are some timeshare developers who do provide that second chance of employment/career as long as the job seeker(s) haven’t been convicted of some heinous crime and can get through any licensing barriers and/or restrictions/requirements that may be applicable.
I personally know a few of those
‘criminals’ individuals and because they were given that second opportunity they were and are more loyal to the developer than many of their counterparts and indeed became stellar revenue-producing team-playing ‘employees’ as well as solid taxpaying citizens and to this day they live very productive lives supporting their families, local communities and the nation.
At the end of the day I’m pretty darn sure that just about every living person in the USA has or will at one time or another — whether caught or not — break one or more laws, and this includes all those millions and millions of ‘tours’ and the timeshare owners/members as well.
So for those developers who don’t offer a second chance (again, excluding heinous crimes, etc.) I say to them if they are not going to “cast the first stone” at their sales guests or owners/members then they should not be
hypocritical judgmental simply because a job ‘applicant’ has some sort of ‘record’.
After all, they keep some pretty good company when you consider other ordinary folks whose names/faces are unknown to us all as well as some famous people reportedly arrested, like Martha Stewart, Bill Gates, Larry King, Frank Sinatra, Oliver Stone, Willie Nelson, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Winona Ryder, Martin Sheen, Robert Downy Jr., Charles Barkley, Halle Berry, Heather Locklear, etc.
And if you want to talk about political figures (past or present) there’s former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Tom Delay, Lewis “Scooter” Libby, Oliver North, Jesse Jackson, Jr., etc. Or how about religious leaders who’ve had one or two issues — well, let us not continue. As I said, almost everyone deserves a second chance.
Good Luck Out There!
