November 29, 2013 — Are you a person who believes there was a ‘Big Bang’ some 13.5 billion years ago when the contents of the known universe began to form and then planet earth started to take shape about 9.5 billion years later? Or do you believe a deity created everything a handful of thousands of years ago and that our ancestors roamed with the dinosaurs? And what’s this have to do with timeshares you ask? Read on friends!
So Here’s The Scoop: First of all people will believe what they believe regarding the origins of everything, including their lives, and that is fine and dandy as long as we all acknowledge that it is truly astonishing that any of us are here in the first place.
Our mere existence is truly amazing and the one inescapable reality is there are billions of people who have previously lived, are alive today and those coming down the chute, so to speak, who should be very thankful for their lives every day and not just on Turkey Day or during a Holiday Season!
And I’m pretty darn sure that if the Vegas Odds Makers were given all the variables, the data and other info such as time, space, velocity and distance — including the number and sizes of all the suns, planets, moons, solar systems, galaxies and black-holes, etc. — they would determine that the odds of any one of us being here and then walking upright would be pretty darn astronomical.
Call or believe our being here what you want – Creationism, evolution or whatever – but at the end of the day, especially considering the shortness of our individual lives, another inescapable reality is that our time here goes by way too fast anyway!
And speaking about time flying: Consider, for example, when Orville and Wilbur Wright made the first known machine to carry ‘man’ that actually lifted off the ground and flew was on December 17, 1903. It was then a little less than an average human life span — 66 years later on July 20, 1969 — when Neil Armstrong was the first person from earth to step out onto the surface of our moon. Yes, time sure does fly!
And since we’re all in the hospitality ‘biz’, it is going on 52 years since Motel 6 first opened their doors in 1962. Wow, some readers of my column are darn near that old – some older – and the Motel chain that became a ‘Brand’ for leaving “the light on for you”, started telling road warriors in 2012 that “50 years, the light’s still on”.
Which brings me to how fast the first 50 years of the timeshare industry has passed and how fortunate timeshare owners/members are to ‘live’ the vacation lifestyle provided by those darn ‘timeshares’; and how lucky all of us are who have enjoyed a lot of fun and a pretty decent living working in the ‘biz’ over the decades – an industry many of us still love to this day!
And from a sales perspective what’s not to adore? Roll out of bed 4-6 days a week – head off to a pretty neat sales center whereby reps apply their trade and – Golly Gee Wally – talk with sales guests about travel – vacationing – seeing the world – experiencing new cultures – spending time with family – meeting new friends – shopping, dining, romance and resting on a (e.g.) sunny beach somewhere having escaped the often grind, grudge and rut of ‘their’ often ordinary and boring existence.
Oh, plus the thrill of sitting on those ‘little-round-tables’ and having the opportunity to make a few ‘huskies’ (hundreds) or a couple ‘grand’ (thousands) each day – and in most cases never working the typical 8 hour mundane ‘shift’ including those swing and graveyard hours other ‘jobs’ require!
Yes indeed – being in sales in our industry where the ‘boss’ also flips hundreds of dollars per sales guest so the reps get that ‘shot’ every working day is something to be truly thankful for – along with all the other opportunities Timeshare Land provides us all.
That is why this week I want to thank all the timeshare developers, management, marketing, administrative, sales personnel, household workers, sales guests and owners/members etc. – worldwide – past, present and future – who make it all ‘gel’ – and for the incredible ‘ride’ many of us have enjoyed over the many years!
To you all – Endless Thanks!
Good Luck Out There!
