In Saudi Arabia, where women must cover themselves from head to toe and are not allowed to travel, work or marry without the permission of a male guardian, they are also not allowed to drive a car. One cleric famously claims that driving would hurt women’s ovaries and bring “clinical disorder” upon their children.
Recently a handful of Saudi women protested the ban by getting behind the wheel, and many of them posted videos of themselves driving on YouTube. Those videos were big hits, but the one that went viral was a satiric remake of Bob Marley’s “No Woman No Cry” by a Saudi comedian named Hisham Fageeh and his colleagues, wherein he sang (among other things) “Ovaries are safe and well, so you can make lots and lots of babies.”
Less than two days after its release (which coincided with the protest by Saudi women) the video had more than three million views on YouTube. It’s still the most popular YouTube video in Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries, and has been a big hit around the world from South Africa to Denmark to Canada and the USA.
So in case you missed it and you’re in the mood for smiling, here it is: No Woman No Drive.
