ORLANDO, FL (November 1, 2013) — Richard Shanley, the Summer Bay Resort Security Officer who rescued and evacuated 105 guests from a building that was collapsing into a sinkhole the evening of Aug. 11, was honored as one of “Harvey’s Heroes” on the season 2 premiere of the hit “Steve Harvey” nationally syndicated daytime show. Shanley told Harvey, “I’m just an ordinary run-of-the-mill guy, doing my job. I needed to take care of my guests.” He was on the job just two months and had just started his work shift that night at 11 p.m., 20 minutes before the sinkhole occurred.
Harvey, who received a 2013 People’s Choice Award as Favorite New Talk Show Host, presented Shanley with a special “Harvey’s Hero” jacket customized with his name and a Caribbean vacation getaway. “You are a real hero. It’s amazing what you did,” Harvey told him.
