January 16, 2015 — A reader made an interesting comment last week about my column but I’m pretty darn sure this seemingly frustrated person really wanted to make a statement about a different section of Inside The Gate (ITG) because, though I could be incorrect, I don’t believe over the past several hundred columns I’ve ever written about the concerns raised by “New Reader” (NR).
So Here’s The Scoop: Soon starting our 6th year I’ve made it a personal policy to never post my own comments in response to what others have written in the remarks section below each weeks’ Scoop. However, last week NR asked a question in that section so today I’m going to do my best to respond.
I’ve ‘copied and pasted’ NR’s statement, comments and question verbatim as follows:
“Well your NEGATIVE slant-on the industry’s black-heads is NOT developer or sales friendly at all. All we see is the Whitehead/ Sundance crap and the MX fraud stuff which leads any casual reader to believe that ALL TS is a rip off? WHY do you choose to alienate the professional companies (i am one) who advertise with you by HIGHLIGHTING the small percentage of miscreants? I love the site but WHY SIR do you so highlight the scam artists who are the minority, and thereby give the alleged MAJORITY of interested readers pause????? WHY??”
I don’t know who NR is because like anyone else can NR decided to remain anonymous; but on behalf of the entire staff at ITG and, as I mentioned in last week’s column – thank you NR for reading and advertising in ITG. And I can assure you and everyone else our intention, format, service and actions have never been to “alienate the professional companies” in our industry.
Allow me to briefly explain. Six days each week, 52 weeks each year (and soon starting our 6th year) ITG publishes front page press releases and news stories about and for timeshare developers and ancillary companies with products/services and programs, etc. that are of interest to the majority of our readers (including consumers). This content is mostly beneficial and supports our global industry in a positive manner.
For example(s) of that, at the top right hand side of each ITG page all readers will clearly see our “Search By Topic” (SBT) feature located right below our ‘SEARCH’ tool; the SBT element is a drop down list that will lead all readers to the main content menu for ITG including but not limited to TS news stories, PR’s and other relative industry topics.
And to make it convenient for all readers today I’ve gone ahead and listed those ‘topics’ below:
- ALL NEWS HEADLINES
- Associations and Events
- Design, Refurbishment, Software, Consulting, other Miscellaneous
- Destination Clubs, Fractional, PRCs, Condo Hotels, Campgrounds, RVs
- Exchange Companies
- -New Affiliations
- Industry Reports
- Legal Issues
- Morning Meeting
- News by Location
- – Europe and UK
- -India, Asia/Asia Pacific & Other International
- -Mexico & Latin America
- -Middle East & Africa
- -USA & Canada
- SPECIAL FEATURES
- -Guest Columnists
- -Off Topic
- -Scoop du Jour
- Timeshare Travel
- -Resorts and Destinations
- -Travel Deals and Events
- Woody’s Roadkill Cafe
- Timeshare Fraud
- Timeshare Resales/Rentals
- Travel/Vacation Clubs
Choose any topic in that drop-down menu and you will be taken to everything we’ve ever published in that category.
Another tool ITG provides our growing audience is located at the bottom right hand side of each page and that is our “Archives” section that we started in September of 2009 when we decided to make all ITG content fully retrievable – free of charge – and that too is beneficial for our industry and our verifiable average monthly audience of 89,164 readers.
The Archives section is also a drop down list and there anyone can select which month and year are of interest to them – click on that – and they’ll have instant and free access to all that timeshare news coverage, stories etc. – of which 99% (+ -) is industry positive.
And, by the way NR – since you’ve advertised with us – you’ll be pleased to know that your ad campaign was and/or is also published on every single page throughout ITG including all archived pages (which, in all, ITG is now thousands of pages ‘deep’).
At, I’m told, ITG has the lowest CPM (Cost Per Thousand) page view advertising rate in our industry!
Of course – if anyone prefers to just do some research on a timeshare related topic, association, company or person etc. – that is where the ITG “SEARCH” tool comes into play and they can type in their inquiry and every PR, news story etc. we’ve ever published the past 5 years – is there for review and further consideration.
There are other sections within ITG such as our very popular GateHouse Timeshare Blog area that is updated weekly with all sorts of positive news, tips, info and content that includes a new inspiring music video each week, a Tweet of the Week – the Weekly Wisecrack (for those with a sense of humor) – the Morning Meeting with sales tips, and more.
And then there are my glorious columns ITG and articles from guest columnists, etc., including our own philanthropic activities from time to time and for other entities like The Brian Gay Invitational, presented by Diamond Resorts International that continues to raise funds for the Walt Disney Pavilion at the Florida Hospital for Children in Orlando.
The bottom line is simply this NR: We have always supported our great industry – from day one – and now nearly 1,900 editions later we will continue to do just that well into the future.
In fairness, as NR did point out last week – sometimes those “industry’s black-heads” get coverage as well, just like negative topics or news stories do from any leading news source/service be they ITG, your local newspaper, the nightly TV Network news, cable news programs and radio talk shows etc.
But, as an industry niche publication, the “black-heads” stories represent less than 1% of ITG’s total coverage – and ya ought to see what we’ve never published the past 5 years including tips, claims, assertions and accusations e-mailed or phoned in to us by readers regarding ‘some’ developers, ‘some’ upper-lower TS management and ‘some’ marketing and sales reps, etc.
I hope, NR, I’ve answered your concerns to your full satisfaction and that you continue to read and advertise ITG and maybe at the end of the day your posting last week was simply one of those moments in life (and we all have them) when you were just having one of ‘those’ days and needed to vent.
On the other hand, I could be wrong – so be assured that all of us here at ITG are big fans when it comes to freely and openly sharing perspectives so if you have anything else you’d like to say about my columns or any other section of ITG – then by all means express yourself further and do so as often as you so desire.
Good Luck Out There
