CHARLESTON, WV (May 11, 2015) — West Virginia State Auditor Glen Gainer has announced that Cease and Desist Orders have been issued against three timeshare advertising and rental companies.
The three Florida-based timeshare companies — Access Travel Network of Orlando City, Premium Timeshare Exchange of Sanford, and Florida Finest Villas of Clermont — were issued Cease and Desist Orders by the Land Sales and Condominiums Division of the State Auditor’s Office.
Auditor Gainer recently remarked at AARP’s Consumer Scam Jam that many in the timeshare advertising and resale business, “are going to take a fee from you and do nothing about helping you unwind from that timeshare.”
All three of the companies called West Virginia timeshare owners with offers to advertise, sell, or otherwise assist them in transferring their timeshare interests for an advanced fee.
Specifically, Access Travel Network promised to facilitate the rental of a West Virginian’s Pigeon Forge, Tennessee timeshare for $1,200.00 a week, and also promised that the owner would receive a $14,000 check in 60-90 days. Premium Timeshare Exchange pledged to advertise an Orlando property for rental or sale. Florida Finest Villa assured a West Virginia owner that they would facilitate the sale of their Virginia Beach timeshare.
In each of these cases, once the upfront payments were made by the owners, the Cease and Desist Orders issued by the Auditor’s Office found that, “[t]here was no further contact or communication established” by the companies.
Timeshare companies that do business in West Virginia are required to be registered with the State Auditor’s Office. Consumers are encouraged to contact the State Auditor’s Office toll free at 888-368-9507, or visit www.wvsao.gov to verify that a timeshare company is properly registered prior to paying any advance fees, or file a complaint if they may have been a victim of a suspected scam.
