CANCUN, Mexico (June 17, 2015) — The state of Quintana Roo, where Cancún and Riviera Maya are located, is in the storm and hurricane displacement path, thus Sunset World is already prepared and duly qualified to face any alert of that kind.
Aiming to protect the physical integrity of its guests and collaborators, as well as reducing the damages that may occur to the company’s assets, Sunset World Resorts & Vacation Experiences developed several mechanisms to face this hurricane and rainy season that is now in force. One of these mechanisms is the creation of a handbook to know what to do before, during and after a hurricane.
At the same time, the authorities have assigned shelters to take care of guests in the best conditions possible in case an evacuation is needed. “At this moment in Sunset World we are completely prepared and qualified to face the 2015 rain and hurricane season” stated Luis Fernando Garrido, Training and Development Coordinator at Sunset World Resorts & Vacation Experiences.
He also explained that, in the case of an evacuation, members and guests at Sunset World will have transportation to the refuge assigned to them in solid ground, where Sunset World will provide them with water, the food best suited for a contingency and a comfortable and safe place to rest. Once the contingency has passed, the same transportation will take members and guests back to their resorts.
Luis Fernando Garrido pointed out that the refuge has all the necessary safety measures to shelter members and guests and that the Public Safety organisms have certified it. In reference to the operations manual, he added that it was designed to define tasks and responsibilities for every department of the hotel involved in these cases, assigning responsibilities in the preparation procedures, the evaluation of vulnerabilities and all such activities applicable in every stage.
He also remarked that work begins in April with the preparation and prevention stages, which include maintenance and human resources procedures and collecting all the material needed for a possible emergency, going over agreements and negotiations for assistance, insurance policies, vital files, communication with the authorities, training; weather information and getting all the needed updated information from the media.
He also pointed out that when facing a possible impact by a hurricane; communication with each department is constant, starting with warnings and alerts until the impact takes place and even once the contingency has passed. In regards to the recovery stage, he added that it includes the analysis of the effects of the hurricane, cleaning and rescue operations, the renewal of hotel operations as well as renewal of links with guests and the community.
He specified that it is important to keep in mind that a hurricane is an event out of the control of any company and institution, thus it is advisable to keep calm and heed all the instructions given by state and municipal authorities. “At Sunset World our priority is the safety of our members and collaborators” he emphasized.
It is important to remember that the rain and hurricane season in the tropical Atlantic Ocean officially begins on June 1 and ends on November 30 every year. This means that, within this period, the possibilities of a system of clouds developing into a hurricane increases. However, due to the presence of the El Niño phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean, it is expected that 2015 will be an atypical year with the forecast that only three storms will reach a hurricane category in the Atlantic.
