White Point, Nova Scotia (January 4, 2017) — Not only did more than 170 people exceed the goal of 150 Polar Bunny Dippers on January 1st to mark the official kick-off to Canada’s 150th anniversary, Mom Nature also made a special guest appearance. Surrounded by hundreds of spectators, as the choir of dippers gathered, making a human 1-5-0 to sing O’ Canada, a brilliant rainbow appeared in the sky, evolving into a double rainbow, guiding the dippers as they hopped, skipped and dunked themselves into the Atlantic Ocean.
The crowds started flowing into White Point for the Polar Bunny Dip early, as red and white adorned dippers gathered for the 3pm start. However, Joanne Veinotte, White Point’s GM says it wasn’t until after the event was over and tallies were made that they knew they exceeded the goal of hosting 150 dippers in honour of Canada’s 150th year. “To be honest, we were all so swept up in the crowds’ excitement and enthusiasm that we lost sight of the goal, and simply wanted to enjoy the moment, especially when the double rainbow appeared” says Veinotte.
Dippers of all ages came from all over Nova Scotia, even Germany and Brazil as exchange students wanted to experience the Canadian tradition of ‘Polar Dipping’ into the Atlantic Ocean. Adorned in red and white, the 2017 edition of the Polar Bunny Dip welcomed many first timers who wanted to make this the year they did the dip. White Point Beach Resort’s Marketing Manager says the event exceeded their expectations, “Reaching our goal of 150 dippers was one thing, but having the pleasure of seeing so many smiling faces, sharing this very special memory with family and friends in such a special place, it really is an honour and privilege.”
Like clockwork, the Team at White Point, with the cooperation of Mother Nature, welcomed more than 200 spectators and over 170 dippers. Following the dip into the Atlantic Ocean, it was into the indoor pool for the warm-up with hot chocolate.
While photos and videos are being streamed and shared all over social media, Veinotte says her team considers themselves incredibly lucky. “Kicking off 2017 with a full rainbow is definitely a sign of a great year ahead for everyone.” Plans are already underway for 2018 as Jan. 1st will mark the kick-off to the Resorts 90th birthday year.
The Polar Bunny Dip marks the official kick-off to a whole year of Canada 150 events at White Point. Later this month they will launch the Great Canadian S’more Challenge, s’moring their way across Canada one province at a time, starting with Nova Scotia on January 21st. On Jan 28 & 29, in partnership with the Green Horse Society and Parks Canada, they’ll bring Sable Island, Canada’s 43 National Park, ashore as they host ‘Salute to Sable Island’ with special guest Zoe Lucas – and a goal of 150 guests.
