~ I Have a Little Dreidel... ~

Dreidel!

NUN - nothing happens - next player spins the dreidel
GIMEL - player takes all tokens in the pot
HEY - player takes half of the pot
SHIN - player must put one token into the pot
One of the best known symbols of Chanukah is called the "dreidel" (Yiddish) or "s'vivon" (Hebrew). Pronounced to rhyme with "cradle", a dreidel is a four sided top with a Hebrew letter on each side.

The letters on the four sided dreidle are N.G.H.S. which means Nes Gadol Hayah Sham. (A great miracle happened there). In Israel the "shin" is replaced by a "pey" so that the words meant: "A great miracle happened here."

Dreidel is also a popular game played during the Holiday. Players use pennies, nuts, raisins, or chocolate coins (gelt) as tokens or chips. Every player puts an equal share of something - nuts, raisins, pennies, or chocolate coins - into the "pot". The first player takes a turn spinning the dreidle. When the dreidel stops, the letter that is facing up decides the fate, as shown above.

Here's the dreidel song for you, as performed by Jewish a cappella group Shir Soul.

dreidleThe Dreidel Song

I have a little dreidel
I made it out of clay
And when it's dry and ready
Then dreidel I shall play

O dreidel dreidel dreidel
I made it out of clay
O Dreidle, dreidel, dreidel
Then dreidle I shall play

It has a lovely body
With legs so short and thin
And when it is all tired
It drops and then I win

Oh, dreidel, dreidel, dreidel
With leg so short and thin
Oh, dreidel, dreidel, dreidel
It drops and then I win.

My dreidel's always playful
It loves to dance and spin
A happy game of dreidel
Come play now let's begin

Oh, dreidel, dreidel, dreidel
It loves to dance and spin
Oh, dreidel, dreidel, dreidel
Come play, now, let's begin.
