Candlelight Bars (parve)
-from Miriam Altmann
These bar cookies are quick to make and easy to
serve and the ingredients have neither meat nor dairy, hence the reference to "parve". The molasses and
banana combination make it really delicious! Read the label when buying chocolate chips, though, as many brands
- 2 cups all-purpose flour (sifted)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/3 cups sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 tablespoons molasses
- 1/2 cup chopped nuts
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 3/4 cup margarine
- 1 egg
- 2 or 3 ripe bananas, mashed (about 1 cup)
- 6 ounces (1 cup) chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9 by 13 pan.
Sift dry ingredients and set aside.
Cream margarine and sugar. Beat in egg, vanilla
and molasses. Mash bananas and add alternately with the sifted dry ingredients. Beat well, scraping side of bowl
with spatula. Fold in nuts and chocolate chips.
Spread batter in prepared pan and bake for 45 minutes,
or until done. Cool on a rack for about 10 minutes. Cut into bars.
