QUOTABLE QUOTES: “I should write a book on how to get by on $500 million because apparently there are a lot of people who don’t know how to do it.” —Warren Buffett
An old friend dropped by recently and we shared war stories about our timeshare experiences until early in the morning, fueled by occasional, er, sips of inebriants. We laughed our heads off and had a great time and slept it off until noon.
The most memorable part of the night for me, though, was a description of a certain Vice President of Sales, still working in the industry even after burning his way through almost every developer on the planet, whom my friend described as a “post tortoise”.
“A post tortoise?” I said. “What’s that?”
“Well, city boy,” he drawled, “When you’re driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a tortoise balanced on top, that’s a post tortoise.
“The thing is you know he didn’t get up there by himself, he doesn’t belong up there, he doesn’t know what to do while he’s up there, he’s elevated beyond his ability to function, and you just wonder what kind of dumb ass put him up there to begin with.”
I’d love to tell you the name of the person to whom my friend was referring, but alas it wouldn’t be prudent. I’ll bet a lot of you have worked with or for him over the years though.
Think about it, and I’ll bet you could make a good solid guess about the post tortoise’s identity…
