PRINCEVILLE, HI (April 5, 2011) — GreenCar Hawaii (www.greencarhawaii.com), the first Personal Vehicle Shared Mobility (PVSM) company in Hawaii and the only one of its kind serving the travel and tourism markets nationwide, was recently awarded a $200,000 grant to introduce electrical vehicles (EV) to car-sharing services within the hospitality industry.
“We are very excited about being able to add four to six EVs to our current hybrid fleet,” notes Justin MacNaughton, co-founder with Warren Doi of GreenCar Hawaii. “Visitors to Hawaii will get the chance to personally see and feel how an EV operates and take that experience home, and Hawaii will have fewer cars operating on fossil fuel on the road. It’s a good boost in the right direction.” MacNaughton said they plan on installing three to four charging stations at partner hospitality locations to allow immediate integration of the EVs into their fleet.
GreenCar Hawaii was one of six companies selected from 19 applicants to Hawaii’s Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) EV Ready Grant Program, established to speed up market acceptance of EVs and related charging equipment, an important strategy in reaching Hawaii’s 70 percent clean energy goal. A total of $2.6 million in federal stimulus funds was awarded. For more information, go to http://electricvehicle.hawaii.gov.
In June 2010, GreenCar Hawaii launched its first PVSM platform with two hybrid-electric vehicles at Pure Kauai Luxury Getaways (http://www.purekauai.com/), followed a month later at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa in Poipu (http://www.kauai.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels/) with four hybrid-electric vehicles for on-demand use by the hour (or day) directly from the hospitality partners. The company expects to complete agreements with international hospitality network partners on Oahu this year.
GreenCar Hawaii provides a travel value alternative that seeks to “Save Time, Money, and Hawaii.” The company offers on-demand and self-serve access to clean energy vehicles by the hour directly from hotel and timeshare properties. Shared use of clean-energy vehicles improves traffic congestion and reduces vehicular emissions while enhancing the visitor’s experience with a more convenient service platform that allows them to rent a vehicle for only the time actually used.
