f you’re the kind of person who has always wanted to go on safari but without giving up the luxuries of life, then Kruger Park Lodge, a luxury timeshare resort in the magnificent Kruger National Park, is just your ticket.
Located in Mpumalunga (aka the Eastern Transvaal), on the far eastern side of South Africa where it meets the country of Mozambique, this is Africa at its best: Big and wild and filled with the wildlife for which the entire continent is famous.
With a population of nearly 3 million, this region still does not seem crowded or over commercialized, perhaps due to the
proximity of Kruger National Park and the private reserves on its western border. This is one of South Africa’s most popular tourist destinations, where people are irresistibly drawn by the wealth of tribal legends, the magnificent scenery and by the saga of the 1870s gold rush era. Few countries can match this place for the stunning beauty of its savannahs, mountains and canyons, teeming with big game animals, exotic wildlife and birds.
Steeped in the history of pioneers, hunters and fortune seekers, fascinating gold rush towns abound. Barberton and Pilgrim’s Rest are among the most famous. Nowadays, streams once panned for gold have become the haunts of eager anglers and lazy trout.
Perhaps aptly, this is known as “Paradise Country”.
The Kruger National Park, named after President Paul Kruger (who proposed the park in 1884) is a huge nature reserve stretching three hundred and fifty kilometres (217.5 miles) along the Mozambique border with an average width of sixty kilometres (30 miles). The Park as it is known today covers 20,000 square kilometres. It boasts the world’s greatest concentration of species and is the largest game reserve in South Africa.
Most of the park consists of plat grass and bush covered plains, better known in South Africa as the savanna or bosveld. There are a number of rivers flowing from east to west within the park, with wonderful names like Limpopo, Luvuvhu, Shingwedzi, Letaba, Olifants, Timbavati and Sabie– and the Crocodile river flowing from north to south.
If you have always longed to see Africa’s wildlife up close, to go on ‘safari’, to experience the wonders that have so captivated generations of non-Africans, Mpumalunga is an excellent place for it.
En route to the Kruger National Park through Mpumalanga, you have the advantage of some stunning scenery. If you are driving, turn off the N4 to the village of Dullstroom, travel over the Long Tom Pass and its splendid panoramic views to Lone Creek Falls and the charming forestry town of Sabie. Just beyond Sabie, the Mac Mac Falls are worth stopping for; and you can treat yourself to a swim in the crystal-clear pools. Or you can relish some of the names of scenic places: Bourke`s Luck, Blyde River Canyon, God`s window…
Major cities and towns for your exploring pleasure include Nelspruit, Witbank, Sabie, Graskop, White River and Pilgrim’s Rest.
Only 30 miles from the Park, sprawling lazily beside the swift waters of the Sabie River, is a one-of-a-kind resort, the luxurious and utterly wonderful Kruger Park Lodge, a Legacy Hotels and Resorts property. An RCI Gold Crown Resort, this is where you want to be if you like your adventure and big game viewing to be both convenient and comfortable. (For instance, if you are a golfer you are likely to see a hippo or maybe a crocodile in the dam alongside the fairways.)
Without question this is a very upscale resort, a byword for privacy, comfort and gracious living. The architectural theme requires all homes to have thatch roofs, face brick exteriors, wooden windows and doors. Facilities on the resort include four tennis courts, three swimming pools, a restaurant and various children’s playground activities. There is a driving range at the entrance gate to the resort. Various walks have been set out around the golf course and along the river and guests may watch the local hippo from the safety of a hippo hide built on the edges of one of the many dams on the property.
The current property development comprises 140 private and fractional homes and 84 timeshare units. Timeshare at Kruger Park Lodge is based on a floating fixed week calendar and is sold in 1 week modules on a Shareblock basis.
With lush green gardens and vistas over water and woodland, the two- three- and four-bedroom bungalows have at least 2 bathrooms, a full kitchen and a lounge with a sleeper sofa. On those days when you are not exploring the wonders of the surrounding area, you can relax in the cool waters of the swimming pool, enjoy a round of golf on the Gary Player designed course, play tennis or squash or just lounge around enjoying the views over water and woodland. The resort’s fully equipped clubhouse is a central meeting place, which also lends itself to conferences and other group activities. There is also a grocery store nearby for your convencience.
If you can tear yourself away from the luxury of your air-conditioned bungalow, you`ll discover countless wonderful ways to spend the day besides visiting Kruger Park. You can arrange for horseback riding, hot air ballooning, fishing excursions (though you can fish right onsite, too, if you want), or take a guided tour to all kinds of wonderful places.
Bring mosquito repellent, wear comfortable shoes, and don’t forget your camera!
And be prepared. Some pretty famous people who have visited Africa have afterward been unable to get it out of their souls. It could happen to you, too, if you open your senses to its wonders.
