HELSINKI, Finland (November 24, 2015) — As of 1 December 2015, Holiday Club Åre will become the eighth spa hotel in the Holiday Club chain. The hotel that has operated under the same name since its establishment will be moved by means of a corporate acquisition from the Holiday Club Spa Hotels Ab to a new joint venture in which Holiday Club Resorts Oy will have a 51% shareholding. Holiday Club Resorts Oy already owns holiday homes and Villas holiday apartments in Åre.
The other owner of the joint venture that will purchase Holiday Club Åre is the Swede Mats Svensson with a 49% share. Svensson, a veteran of the travel industry and the Managing Director of Holiday Club Sweden AB in the early years, will become Chairman of the Board for the new company.
“Holiday Club is a strong brand with plenty of potential for growth in Åre and in general.
In 2004, I was involved in establishing the spa hotel, and it is wonderful to take part in the development of our joint product once more. I have the utmost faith in Åre as a versatile area for travel,” Mats Svensson says and adds:
“The spa hotel has a good reputation and a loyal customer base, thanks to its professional staff and already functional concept.” The personnel will transfer to Holiday Club as existing employees.
The owners of Holiday Club SPA Hotels, Stefan Karlsson and Ingemar Johansson, have worked as entrepreneurs in Åre since 2011, at which point they also entered into a contract to use the Holiday Club name.
“The past period at Holiday Club Åre has been inspirational. It has been extremely rewarding to work with Holiday Club, the trade and industry in Åre, and the municipality. Now is the time to leave Åre behind and concentrate on our other projects. We wish the new owners the best of luck,” Stefan Karlsson says.
Earlier in the autumn, the Indian company Mahindra Holiday & Resorts, which is targeting growth in European markets, became the majority owner of Holiday Club Resorts Oy. The return of Holiday Club Resorts Oy as the owner of the Åre spa hotel is a natural step on the path to the international stage.
“The deal strengthens Holiday Club’s presence in Åre, where we will keep investing now and in the future. Up until 2011, we owned the spa hotel, so we are quite familiar with the strengths of the location. Åre provides a wonderful environment not only for Swedish and Nordic tourists but also conference attendees and event-goers. I believe that internationalization will draw in new customer flows from Asia, for example,” says Managing Director of Holiday Club Resorts Oy Vesa Tengman.
Holiday Club Resorts Oy has operated in Åre since 2004. It provides high-quality one- and two-bedroom holiday homes for timeshare use and rent. In addition to this, Holiday Club is constructing Villas apartments on the shore of Lake Åre near the spa hotel. One-sixths of these will be sold for “Partner” ownership. The first eight 2–3 bedroom Villas apartments have just been completed. The sale of the 21 second phase apartments will begin in December, and the construction is intended to begin in May 2016.
Holiday Club Resorts Oy is the leading weekly timeshare company in Europe and a significant operator in the fields of holiday housing and tourism. Holiday Club Resorts Oy has 32 resorts and nearly 2.000 holiday homes. Eight of the resorts feature not only holiday homes but also a spa hotel.
