November 20, 2015 — Obviously it is that time of year when we are in the midst of all the different Holidays that are celebrated and it also happens to be one of the busiest vacation times of the year for timeshare owners/members heading off to (e.g.) the tropics for some ‘Sun & Fun’, to mountain retreats for skiing vacations and those sailing off to cruise the high seas, etc. Naturally that started me thinking about our wonderful industry and how — long before the Brands came on board — ‘we’ forever changed the options available to travelers around the world by providing them superior accommodations and a vacating lifestyle second to none.
So Here’s The Scoop: According to the RCI.com website there are now over “7 million timeshare owners” and if that is true and if all 7 million took a one week timeshare vacation at some time during 2015 then our industry helped those owners/members enjoy about 1.18 BILLION hours doing what they love doing – VACATIONING!
And I’m guessing here, but over the 5-decades-long span of our industry’s history we have likely helped owners/members enjoy scores of Billions of hours more with their families and friends having, mostly, the vacationing times of their lives traveling all over the world while experiencing different cultures and making new friends etc.
That reality alone is something we all can be very proud of doing.
For those readers who haven’t been around ‘the biz’ that long you may like to know that when it all got started back in the 1960’s and well into the 1980’s most vacation options available to the general public often meant staying in lousy accommodations UNLESS, that is, the vacationers were in the top 10-20% of income-earners who could afford the expensive hotels that offered ‘suites’ with all the bells and whistles.
But for the rest of the folks it was pretty much narrowed down to no-frills cramped motel/hotel rooms with not so much as a coffee pot in the tiny 250-square-foot vacationing ‘love nest’ that they often shared with their kids.
Back in the day it was the risk-taking developers and the marketing and sales folks who made it all happen and I, having been around the Land of Time since the late 1970’s, remember only too well how the Brand hotel chains (and others) during that era bad mouthed them thar timeshares — and all us scoundrels in sales and marketing.
And it wasn’t just them. There were politicians who tried their hardest to completely shut down the industry in places like Hawaii during the early 1980’s. Fortunately for Hawaii and timeshare owners there (and exchangers) that never succeeded but I was there when it was going down, and it was ugly to say the least.
In truth, over time it was our industry that forced the Brands to take a second look at timesharing. They had always been astounded, quite frankly, that people liked the idea of prepaying a portion of their future vacationing costs but once the Brands crunched all the numbers, well, they had no choice but, to follow the old mantra: “If ya can’t beat ’em, join ’em….” And so they did!
With Thanksgiving at hand I wanted to let the whole timeshare world know how thankful I am that before I joined the ranks the ‘founders’ of Timeshareville did what they did back then because they are the ones who risked it all so people like yours truly could come along and live, work, play and make a damn good living in places like the Hawaiian Islands, all over Mexico or the Caribbean as well as in Europe, Asia, Canada, Australia and so many other wonderful and exciting locations.
And I’m also thankful for all the great people I’ve worked with and sold to over the decades and would like to wish them all a great Thanksgiving day with their family and friends because it’s all about being happy, healthy, living well making a good living and being with the ones we love.
On that note I especially want to thank my better half and significant other for all the love, friendship and support over the last nearly 30 years we’ve been together sharing life on this magnificent place we call home – planet earth!
So, rest assured ‘peeps’, this Turkey Day while being fortunate enough eat and drink until my heart’s content I will, without doubt, lift and toast one, two, three or more glasses of spirits and each time I do I will first turn to the east, then to the west, then north, then south and finally skyward thanking one and all for all things positive and the incredible ‘ride’ I and my soul mate continue to enjoy in this amazing industry.
Good Luck Out There
