As President and CEO of CVOA, it is important that I respond to your editorial comments regarding our 2017 Vacation Ownership Conference.
I am pleased that your industry insider “can’t stop laughing”. During times like these, we all need to maintain a sense of humour. Hence my reference to schmoozing. Merriam-Webster says, “Although originally used in English to indicate simply talking in an informal and warm manner, schmooze has since also taken on the suggestion of discussion for the purposes of gaining something.” VO-Con’s goal is to become known as a conference where attendees can gain things – contacts, knowledge, relationships, awareness and a broader network.
When I see all the empty seats during panel sessions at other industry events, I realize how important it is to create an environment in which attendees can spend time on networking and conducting business. The VO-Con agenda includes engaging work sessions and two very dynamic keynote speakers, but we’ve added more unstructured time to allow for schmoozing.
I agree that there are times when it feels like we are “under attack from all fronts”. There will always be issues that our industry must address; but there is also a very bright side – sales are up, earnings reports are positive, consumer sentiment is affirmative.
I invite all the Gatehouse readers to attend VO-Con ’17 to learn, network, confer with industry colleagues and to “Explore The Business Of Vacations”.
In response to the comment about our conference website not being available in French … the vast majority of Canadian vacation ownership properties are located in English-speaking Canada. CVOA’s focus has been on supporting those members as well as industry stakeholders based in the US and Mexico. That said, I will endeavour to have a French site posted.
